The story of Alessia and Paola
The history of this youth centre is deeply linked to Alessia, a young woman from Sant’Agabio who passed away prematurely alongside her mother, Paola.
Since their passing, many charitable initiatives have emerged, in the spirit with which Alessia had chosen to reach out to the most marginalised in Quito. Since 2004, much has been achieved in her name.
From old public toilets to a community centre
The building, which had stood unused for years and was originally intended as public toilets, was made habitable in 1992 following the first restoration works carried out by the parish, in agreement with the local council, transforming it into a community centre.
In 2012, it underwent a further redevelopment project thanks to the support of Casa Alessia, an association founded to carry on Alessia’s dream.
Today it is a true youth centre in the Cascinone area, with spaces for children and young people, educational activities, meetings and catechism classes. Outside, a few pine trees still stand, from which the name ‘Pinetina’ derives.
