This brief message is being shared to coincide with ‘World Day of the Poor’, with the aim of informing the parish community about the activities of the ‘Caritas’ group
The Parish Caritas, established as a pastoral body dedicated to fostering charity in accordance with the spirit of the Gospel, currently carries out its work through the Listening Centre (a place where needs are addressed) and the Food Bank (distribution of essential foodstuffs); where, subject to availability, clothing and household items are distributed on an ad hoc basis.
The ‘Caritas’ group currently consists of around ten staff members and volunteers.
It assists over 100 families living in the S. Agabio neighbourhood and distributes 40–45 food parcels each week.
The food distributed comes from the ‘Food Bank’ Foundation (which organised the ‘Annual Food Collection’ on a national scale this weekend), whilst financial aid is made possible through Caritas projects funded by the 8x1000 contribution to the Catholic Church. (This fact underlines the importance of this mechanism, which enables the Church to carry out charitable projects, and serves as a call to the faithful not to withhold this valuable contribution)
Given the growing influx of people and the resulting increase in demand, we believe it is necessary to consolidate our presence in the local area by bringing in fresh energy to strengthen the various areas of our work (whilst also addressing the natural turnover of volunteers).
We would therefore like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to this assembly of the faithful: we ask that anyone with a concern for social issues make themselves available to support our activities.
Should specific skills relating to social issues emerge that are not currently represented within our group (e.g. dealings with public bodies, social workers, trade union confederations and welfare organisations, legal procedures, regulations, etc.), this could open up new and interesting avenues for action.
